HIS 221 AMERICAN HISTORY I

COURSE GOALS

 HISTORY 221 is a study of early American history with emphasis on social, cultural, political and economic history from the Pre-Colombian period to the Civil War. This course will take a topical approach to early American history through a study of key topics and the evolution of those topics. The topics included are the following: land, exploration, myths of the West, religion, culture of the 1600s/1700s, culture of the 1800s, early Native Americans, early African Americans, early presidents, and early wars. 

 Students are expected to achieve the following goals in this class:

    1. Acquire a knowledge of early American history through readings, discussions, and assignments.

    2. Understand evolutionary trends and cycles in early American history through readings, discussions, and assignments.

   3. Apply the understanding of early American history to modern American history and to America today..

   4. Analyze the basic elements of early American society which includes politics, foreign policy, economics, groups, and culture.

   5. Develop a better understanding of early American history through a topical and cyclical study of various aspects of society.

   6. Evaluate aspects of early American history in terms of trends and patterns.
